Unemployed friend is a bummer. It’s alright that unemployed friends are always broke and you’re constantly having to buy them beers, because everyone’s been that guy. The real bummer is that when one of your friends becomes unemployed, all of a sudden their whole paradigm shifts and the week goes from a carefully planned space of seven days to a wide open field blooming with possibility. Stay up all night drinking and making a collage? Why, sure! It’s Tuesday! I’ve got nothing tomorrow! If you have even an inkling of fun inside you, you’ll be instantly sucked into this laissez-faire mentality and then have to spend the whole next day lecturing yourself about how people with jobs have to say no to things like “midnight bike adventure to Coney Island.”
