Brownout is a bummer. Dusk has its appeal and all, but no one really wants a perpetual indoor dusk mandated by a drop in voltage. Mood lighting at 4 p.m. just makes you feel like you’re living on the cover of a harlequin romance except with less bodice ripping and more squinting to see the book you’re reading. At least a blackout is kind of exciting because you can spook yourself by pretending that it’s the Summer of Sam and that you could be killed at any moment by a crazed maniac. Also for some reason a blackout is the perfect excuse for drinking. The only thing a brown out is perfectly good for is rethinking the way our country regulates the electricity industry, and that’s a bummer for everyone except FERC. Also a bummer: FERC joke?
